Let's Talk About Breasts

Journalist and Former news reader Tracey Spicer bares all for breast cancer awareness.
Let’sTalkAboutBreasts Facebook Page.

I’ve just finished making a documentary raising awareness for early detection of breast cancer. It’s all about starting a conversation, getting women to talk about the importance of self examination, mammograms and early detection. It’s a full length doco made for an online broadcast using the hashtag #letstalkaboutbreasts.

The doco includes confronting moments talking with amazing women who have had to make some really difficult choices. Krystal chose to have a double mastectomy at the age of twenty five after three generations of women in her family suffered from breast cancer. Annette had to choose between her unborn child or treatment for her breast cancer and Sara was on her way for reconstructive surgery on the day we met her.

Tracey, who has a long history of cancer in her family hadn’t had a mammogram in seven years and had been putting off seeing a GP. Through the doco She learns to self examine properly and then has a mammogram, all with cameras in the room filming her the entire time, in an effort to show that the process of early detection is so much better than the alternative.

The highlight is the dinner party scenes where Tracey joins nine other women to have a conversation about breasts. They laugh and cry and share some amazing stories, they admit that we all love to talk but so often we don’t talk about the things that really matter, conversations that can save lives.

Filmed on the Black Magic Cinema Camera on Location around Sydney and at Propped Up Studios in Marrickville.
